TRIP #1:
NASHVILLE

April 1, 2021

On the morning of April Fool's Day, we flew from JFK to BNA. When we landed in Nashville, we were met with the opposite of what we thought Tennessee would have: cold weather. I, traveling with only a light jacket, was devastated. We'd just left snow in Long Island and I was hoping for a warm embrace from the South. Boy, was I left hanging on that one. We hopped in an Uber and made our way to our hotel, one that our driver remarked he hadn't seen before as it appeared to be brand new.

Starved from a breakfast-less morning, we checked in, dropped our bags off, and headed to Martin's Bar-B-Que Joint on foot. The setting was fun and relaxed and the food was out-of-this-world good. Jarren and I sat there in awe, convinced we were going to have a great time in Nashville just by this first impression alone.

After a great lunch, we decided to do exactly what we went to Nashville to do: listen to country music and drink. We had a Pedal Tavern reservation a few hours later, so we decided to take it easy and just scope out a few spots on Broadway for the time being. When 6:00 neared, we made our way over to a local liquor store for some drinks to bring onto Pedal, then walked over to the Pedal start-point and got ready to go.

Although it was cold out, our Pedal ride was a blast! We joined a public ride and were grouped with a handful of people from all across the country, visiting Nashville for different reasons. The ride lasted 90 minutes and took us on a tour of Broadway, with one drink stop on the way. The drink stop, Headquarters Beercade, introduced me to my first ever Peanut Butter & Jelly shot, and I was instantly hooked. We took a group photo, said our goodbyes, and headed out on Broadway.

We first stopped in on Robert's Western World, as I'd read online that it was one of the more legendary spots to hit. It was a good honky for older country music (think 80s and before) and had cheap beer and cheese curds. Someone sitting next to us there, who'd been visiting Nashville for a few days, suggested we go to Tootsies Orchid Lounge, promising we'd love it. I'd read a million positive things about Tootsies when doing my research so we decided, why not? Off we went.

We got to Tootsies at the perfect time: right before lines began to form outside. We made our way to the top floor, ordered some drinks, and stayed there all night. We had the time of our lives but at 2 AM, decided to call it so that we could get some rest and come back tomorrow to do it all over again.

April 2, 2021

Our second morning was... rough. I was lucky I drank a bunch of Pedialyte the day before we went out, but Jarren didn't have as much and safe to say, he had a pretty rough morning. Our hotel stay came with complementary breakfast at the cafe next door, which was my driving force to get out of bed because nothing says revival like a greasy ham and egg croissant and a sh*t ton of coffee. Some food and some hotel-concession-stand Advil was enough to slowly bring Jarren back to life, and after a few hours, we were out and about again.

A lot of people had shared that we should try hot chicken in Nashville, seeing as it started there. There are two main players in the Nashville hot chicken game: Hattie B's and Prince's. After scouring the internet to see which one would win in a fight, I decided we should venture over to 6th and Peabody to try Hattie B's. We waited for approximately 45 minutes for our order of 2 sets of chicken tenders, 2 fruit teas, 2 cups of ranch, and potato salad, just for it to be one of the worst things we'd both ever tasted. I'm not sure what it was about the chicken that turned us off. Maybe it was the rub, the sauce, I honestly couldn't tell you, it just wasn't worth the time or the $28.42 we could've spent somewhere else. We decided to cut our losses and head back to Broadway for some more honky tonkin'.

By the time we got back to Broadway, it was the peak of the day and honkies were overflowing. The line to get into Luke Bryan's was a 2 hour long wait; Jason Aldean's was just about the same. We headed over to Kid Rock's, which was also packed, and struggled to find seats for the first 20 minutes there. When we finally found open spots at the 2nd floor bar, we ordered drinks and some burgers and listened to the band play for a bit. After that, we decided to check out the local shops.

The time for Tootsie's finally came back around and we made our way there, excited for another night of loud country. Once again, we stayed the entire night, and waddled back the 20 minute walk to our hotel.

April 3, 2021

Our third and final day in Nashville was one we were ready for. We were all Nashville-d out and ready to get back home. Our flight wasn't until the afternoon, so we had some time to kill. Our favorite way to do that in Nash-Vegas? Tootsies. We checked out of our hotel and sauntered over to Tootsies on what (just our luck) was the warmest and sunniest day of our trip.

We stood out on the Tootsies balcony with a white claw and a beer in our hands and listened to their daytime band, Roxann, play. When the time got closer to our flight, we hailed an Uber from Broadway and got back to the airport. After a quick Starbucks run, we boarded our flight and headed back to New York. The end to a great vacation.

General
Tips and
Reviews

Cost to Travel:

We actually got this flight twice. We were scheduled to visit in March, but Jarren and I ended up catching COVID and had to reschedule the trip to April. Our original flight in March was $233.60 per person. When we rescheduled to April, our flight cost us $270 per person. A 3 day trip in April from NYC to BNA usually costs between $200-$250 per person.

Things I'd Like To Do Next Time:

I'd like to spend some time in the Gulch, as I hear it's frequented more by Nash natives than tourists. I'd also like to visit the Woolworth lunch counter, site of one of the historic sit-ins during the Civil Rights Movement. Lastly, I'd like to visit Paula Deen's Family Kitchen and Arnold's Country Kitchen.

Your money will come back,
but your time won't.
