EGYPT

The
Basics

Egypt is a country linking northeast Africa with the Middle East.

What
Drew Me

Ever since I was a kid learning about Ancient Egypt in history class, Egypt has been a dream of mine. One of my greatest dreams, actually. I've always dreamed of seeing the pyramids, the tombs, the mummies, all of it. As an adult working on Park Ave, I spent a lot of my free time walking to the Met after work to sit in the Egyptian exhibit and just stare at all of the sarcophagi, mummies, and artifacts in absolute wonder for hours on end. Everything about Ancient Egypt has always been immensely fascinating to me, and as I grew to become more interested in cultural experiences as a teenager and adult, I dreamed of immersing myself in Egypt's rich culture to experience all they had to offer.

Do I Recommend Visiting?

Absolutely, a million times over, YES. I still can't believe it happened. I can't believe that after all of these years of dreaming of experiencing Egypt in the flesh, it finally happened. I'm so lucky and so blessed to live the life that I live, but honestly, I feel like most people I know can do this. Egypt seems so far away and so exotic, but in my opinion, it is a totally attainable trip if it is something you'd like to prioritize.

Off the bat, I have to say that the people are incredibly kind. No, I'm not just saying that, I really mean it. Of all my travels, I think the Egyptian people take the cake for being the kindest to us. From the big cities of Cairo and Alexandria to the small town of Luxor, there was no shortage of hospitality even though we were complete strangers. If you have some preconceived notion of anything else, forget it, because I promise that you will be blown away, too.

Let me add next that Egypt is also very safe. I cannot tell you how many times I went back and forth with the idea of cancelling the trip once the war between Israel and Palestine started, but I am so thankful that I didn't. I mean this so seriously when I say that I felt safer in Egypt than I have ever felt in Baltimore or Trinidad. Ever. Quote me on it. Hold me to it. Come back to me in a few years, I'll say the same thing. Hell, Cairo makes Rome seem like the Bronx in comparison. We, a *very* white guy and an Indian-looking girl with the thickest American accent who always walks around with her phone in her hand, walked the streets at night, took the subway at night, and slept like a babies in our room facing Tahrir Square. The only two times that I ever felt unsafe here was in our Uber in Cairo during rush hour (because the cars were so close together and there was no relief from the exhaust fumes) and when we were being harassed and followed by hagglers at the airport late at night when we were trying to find and get into our Uber. That's it. I cannot stress enough how incorrectly Western media has portrayed this country and it's people. This is absolutely a safe place to come to and I implore you to do extensive research on your own before writing it off.

Egypt has so much to offer. There is, of course, the "must-dos" that go without explanation, like the Great Pyramids of Giza, Sphinx, Valley of the Kings, Egyptian Museum, and all that good stuff, but Egypt is so much more than just that.

The rich Muslim and Christian cultures intermingling through food, religious holidays, architecture and more is something that I believe everyone can benefit from seeing and experiencing first-hand. The food, by the way, is sublime and has the added bonus of also being very healthy.

Although we didn't make it, Egypt also offers resort-styled beach vacation spots. Wild, right? That's exactly what I thought when I first stumbled upon Hurghada and Sharm-el-Sheik.

Egypt has hands-down been the greatest, most enriching travel experience of my life. Jarren and I both feel like we've learned so much and have grown so much as people just from how culturally enriching our experience here was. I urge and implore you to consider visiting this amazing country to experience all of the things it has to offer. If you're even mildly considering going, just do it. You won't regret it.
