VISIT #2:
BRIT'S WEDDING
August 14, 2022
[Note: We landed in Billings on August 13th, but the majority of our day was spent in Dallas on a layover. Please see my Dallas visit entry for details on August 13th!]

On our first full day back in Montana, Jarren did what anyone who knows him would expect him to do: go fishing. He, along with his step-dad, Chris, and his soon to be brother-in-law, Dakota, took off bright and early to have a day to themselves. I got to sleep in (thank God) and spent the morning with my mother-in-law, Steph, and Chris' niece, Keila. Jarren and I flew to Montana to attend his sister, Brittney's, wedding, so today, I had the honor of hanging out with mom and the bride while they wrapped up some last minute wedding venue details. Much like growing up with my own family, I'm so lucky to be a part of another one that so effortlessly makes me feel loved and welcomed. I'd never been to Montana during the summer before, so I was excited to have my tour guides show me around outside of Billings while also getting to focus on something I love: weddings.

Around 1 PM, Steph, Keila and I met Brit and her son, Grayson, in Laurel and we all carpooled out to the ceremony site in Absarokee, a town approximately an hour away from Billings. On the drive there, Steph decided I needed to get lunch at a secret gem: The Dew Drop Inn. Pulling up in the parking lot already had me intrigued. The Dew Drop looked like a place out of movie. Not a place you'd go to looking for fancy fare, but a divey, no-frills eatery that you could instantly tell only locals knew of where the food would be great. I ordered a huckleberry shake (because I am absolutely obsessed with huckleberry) and an Indian taco; Steph's suggestion, as Jarren would devour Indian tacos as a kid. Just as I'd expected: it was phenomenal, although truthfully, it doesn't take very much for anything huckleberry flavored to make me weak in the knees. I made a mental note to ask Jarren to stop here again the next chance I could get.

After finishing up with lunch, we ventured onward to Brit's ceremony site, then visited her reception venue to get a sense of the space. Once done, we headed over to the 307 Bar & Grill to meet up with the guys after their long day of catching and releasing.

Once done, we all headed back to Billings to help Brit and Dakota shop for drinks for the reception. After shopping and saying goodbye to Brit, Dakota, and Grayson, we began driving home when Steph stopped and blessed me with another home-y spot: King's Hat. I truly hit the local-food jackpot that day. I ordered a "flying burger" upon recommendation from Steph and Jarren, which is basically a burger in the form of a good old Uncrustables sandwich. The burger itself wasn't anything special, but it was so unique and simple to eat that I'd get it over and over again.

After a busy day, we returned home to wind down for the next one.

Another beautiful, sunny day in good ole' Billings, Montana. Not much going on today other than our own wedding tasks. When we got engaged back in April, I instantly went to work on securing a venue, as I knew I didn't have a whole lot of time on my hands before venues would be completely booked for June 2023. Booking without visiting meant that I'd booked our venue without ever touring it in person. Today was the day to do so.

We rolled out of bed, had breakfast, and then off we went to Camelot Ranch for our 11 AM tour. The ranch and the grounds were stunning, everything I'd ever hoped they would be, and ran by kind people. It was a great choice of venue, if I do say so myself.

After the venue tour, we headed into downtown Billings for a quick cake tasting with our wedding cake baker, Sam. It was quick visit, and when I voiced how hard it is for me to get my crumb coats right, Sam was kind enough to share her American buttercream recipe with me, even taking the time to handwrite it for me so I'd have the recipe to bring back to Pennsylvania with me. It was one of the kindest acts I'd ever received; this simple act will always stay with me. We tasted two different cakes, decided on the one we wanted, and walked out with some extra slices to take home.

Feeling peckish, we walked over to Mia's Wok for lunch. Honestly, walking over to Mia's, I wasn't confident in the food I was about to try. When I think of Billings, Thai and Filipino food don't instantly come to mind. I ordered the Thai green curry, as I believe myself to be a green curry connoisseur of sorts, expecting to find things wrong with it. However, I was wrong to judge. It was not only good, but spot on. It was like I was having green curry in Astoria back home. We finished, Jarren got to say "I told you so," and we left.

We drove around to kill some time after that, stopping at Men's Wearhouse to get Jarren fitted for his tux for our wedding, then over to a comic book store he used to go to when he was a teenager called Splash Page.

When we got the call that he was off of work for the day, we drove to my father-in-law, Brandin's, house for dinner and spent some time with Jarren's aunt Mandy, uncle Steve, aunt Sam, and cousins Landin, Henry, and Lilly before driving back to Steph's and calling it a night.

[Disclaimer: In this entry, I will be talking about a location that I will not be naming. The reason for this is because this particular hike and location is one of Jarren's absolute favorite spots to go to when he's at home. It's a spot that not a lot of tourists know of and is mainly frequented by locals. In an effort to preserve this location, because I know he loves it so dearly and doesn't want to share it with the world, I will only be referring to it as the "Mountain." If you find it on your own, you find it, but at least you didn't hear it from me.]

5 AM. An early morning. Necessary, because we had a few hours of driving ahead of us, then a few hours of hiking to get to the fishing spot. We left, groggy as all hell, and drove to pick up Brandin for the hike to the Mountain.

Once picked up, there was one more spot we needed to go to: Walmart. Coincidentally, we all needed fishing licenses. One thing that basically the entire state of Montana agrees upon: they are not fans of outsiders. This was clearly exhibited when I paid double the price of Jarren and Brandin's annual fishing license, for a 24 hour license. Why? Because of my silly little New York state ID with my silly little New York City address on it. I commend them, though. Considering that there is no sales tax in Montana, I thought it was smart to charge outsiders outrageously more. So, I took my expensive piece of paper, tucked my tail, and walked out of Walmart ready to get to the Mountain and use it.

On the drive over, Brandin told stories of his time as a kid at various ranches in the area, even helping out at Mel Gibson's ranch, which he pointed out as we passed. We looked for deer and horses on our way until we finally turned onto the [seriously uneven] road to get to the trail parking area.

A week earlier, parts of lower Montana had experienced widespread, devastating flooding which destroyed cities, roads, homes, the works. Due to this, the upper end of the trailhead was closed, causing us to have to park and start our hike an extra mile away. None of us were happy about it. "I'm gonna do it, but I'm gonna complain the whole time," I warned them, but they already knew that.

We start hiking around 9 :30 AM as the sun was beginning to get high in the sky. As we start walking through the bottom of the trail, Brandin pulls over and comes back to us with a palmful of raspberries. Some of them were plump and sweet, some small and tart. We continue down the trail, going out of our way to pick berries as we went.
Once we began our ascent up the side of the mountain, Jarren stops to take photos and asks me how I'm doing. Surprisingly, I'm doing fine. I'm keeping a decent pace, not huffing or puffing, genuinely enjoying the view. I was a far cry from the person I thought I'd be by that point in the hike. I credit all the time I'd spent for the past two months at the Penn State gym using the elliptical as the only reason I wasn't struggling.

A little over an hour passes on the trail and all of a sudden we're doing switchbacks. While I'm not necessarily tired, this is the point where I complain. I hate switchbacks. Luckily, so do Jarren and Brandin, so I wasn't alone in my gripe. After we pass the switchbacks, we approach a rock that Jarren swears is always as cold as a fridge. We press our bodies up against it and sure enough, he's right. It was a welcome relief, considering the sun had begun to fully beat down on us now. We take a minute to enjoy the rock, then continue onward to a new terrain.

What was mainly a dirt trail becomes exposed, jagged rock. Level-footing went completely out the window. It was worse than the switchbacks because it required so much more attention and effort, especially as we were almost at the summit and it would be extremely easy to fall off the side of the "trail" now. I couldn't wait to get to the top.

A bit later, we arrived at the top and were greeted by the most beautiful view. It was like discovering a different world. At the foot of the mountain laid a perfectly blue lake, draped with trees on both sides and crowned with another mountain in the background. It was stunning. We stopped for photos, then began our descent down to the lake.

After a few minutes, we made it down to the bottom, only running into 3 other people there. It was quiet and peaceful. We walked further down, spread out, sat on some rocks, and started fishing. Jarren caught a bunch, but most of them were small and needed to be tossed back. He caught two good ones and asked me to find some good tinder to start a fire to cook them on.

At this point, it had begun to rain slightly, but that was fine, there were still lots of branches and twigs that weren't too wet. He cooked the two fish on some foil above the fire and we all shared them. It was a nice experience getting to share that with them.

After eating and putting out the fire, Jarren wanted to see if he could catch a few more, or if he could help me catch one, as I'd accidentally lost one earlier when reeling it in. Brandin decided to stay loyal to the spot he was in, so we went a little bit further away to try a new space.

Unfortunately, the new spot on the lake did not yield any luck. It actually yielded the opposite for me when I accidentally snagged the hook on a rock deep in the lake and had to break the line, losing a lure. After this, we decided to call it and begin the hike back, as we wanted to make it to the bottom of the trail before the sun set.

What's great about going up a mountain is that you know coming down will be a million times easier. The trek down was a breeze; I actually quite enjoyed it. When we made it back to the bottom of the trail, we began pausing for berries the rest of the way back to the car. We made it back to the car just as the sun had begun setting.

As we begin driving away, we pass a pond covered in lily pads and I notice something big off in the distance, but can't really make out what it is. Upon my first few glances, it just looked like a really big, brown cow. "What is that?" I ask. No one sees what I'm talking about, and then the animal runs off into the woods surrounding the lake. "I swear I just saw like, a really big cow. But like, a really big... brown cow?" No one believes me. We keep driving. As we pass the end of the pond, I turn around and see it again. "Wait, that looks like a moose!" I exclaim. Jarren turns around and goes, "Oh, sh*t, that is a moose! I've never seen a moose here before." It was a great last view to end the trip.

We get back to Brandin's house after dark, then go back to Steph's and immediately fall asleep, tired after a long day.

Finally, a rest day. We mainly just hung around the house all day, recharging.

Later on that night, we got drinks with one of Jarren's childhood friends, Jake, and his girlfriend, Shelby. We all had 2-3 drinks that were all put onto the same bill. When the bill came, I was flabbergasted. A bill that would've been well over $100 in New York, which is exactly the price I was expecting, was less than $40 here. I couldn't believe it. I still can't believe it, actually.

Our last real morning in Billings. Steph rented an Airbnb for us, Chris, Keila, and Chris' daughter, Ashley, to all stay in for Brit's wedding and today was the day we were all going to drive over there. Before we all left, Steph thought it would be nice for us to get breakfast with her, Keila, and Jarren's brother, David, and his family since we were all available this morning.

We met up with everyone at Stella's Kitchen and Bakery, waited around 15-20 minutes to be seated, and placed our orders. I got a huckleberry crepe because , well, of course I did.

Later in the day, we all drove out to the cabin in Absarokee, dropped our stuff off, and made our way over to the quaint ski town of Red Lodge for dinner. We all agreed on getting Mexican, and after my last experience with Thai food in Billings, you'd think I would've stopped judging. I did not. I'd never personally seen a Latino/Latina in Montana before, so I judged, hard. You know where that got me? Exactly in the same position as Mia's Wok. I was SO wrong. I ordered carne asada enchiladas with rice and beans and a Jarritos soda. It was sensational. It was like I was at a spot in Elmhurst, or my regular taco truck in Hempstead. Once more, I had egg on my face. I hope to serve as a cautionary tale to all tourists to places like Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, the Dakotas, etc. Give it a chance. It's definitely one thing I could be better at doing.

After eating, we walked around the town a little bit, then drove past some of the damage the flooding had done. It was a sobering sight to behold: whole houses and roads had just completely collapsed. The damage looked like it would take a great deal of time to rebuild from.

We drove back to the cabin and spent the rest of the night together playing games that were left out in the cabin. We played an especially intense game of Uno, which David's wife, Shelby, ended up winning very sneakily. I love Shelby dearly, but I still think she finessed that game somehow.

After this, we packed it up and went to bed, getting ready for another day.

The day before the wedding was upon us, which means today we'd all be busy bees getting Brit & Dakota's dream day completely set up.

We had a light breakfast of muffins and coffee at the cabin, then went over to the reception venue to meet up with the couple and wedding parties to start getting things done. After setting up tables and chairs and running through the logistics of the setup, Dakota stole all the guys and went off to the ceremony site to set up there. The girls stayed behind to finish putting the decorative touches on the reception space.

We worked for hours and eventually wound down to just drinking and eating chips when we just kinda realized that the guys never came back. We went over to the ceremony site, where they were still trying to get the ceremony arch decorated. Once the arch was done, Brit and Dakota held their ceremony rehearsal; not a single hand present was without a Busch Light or a Twisted Tea.

When the rehearsal was over, we all headed back to the reception venue for the rehearsal dinner for a solid dinner after a day of drinking and working: tacos in a bag and wedding cookies. We sat around, talked, really just had a good time. When dinner wound down, we said our goodbyes and made our way back to the cabin for a bit, then Jarren and I decided to go hang out with Britney, Dakota, Grayson, and the wedding party at their Airbnb. After a few drinks and conversation around the fire pit, we packed ourselves up and headed back to the cabin to end the night.
August 20, 2022
Brit & Dakota's wedding day was finally here! We spent the morning at the cabin once again having coffee and muffins and chatting. One bathroom to 9 people was a challenge, but we made it work. Shelby, Ashley, and I then proceeded to spend the next few hours of the morning doing our makeup and drinking Twisted Teas. Yes, you read that right: hours.

When we were finally almost ready, Jarren's aunt Desiree and cousin Anna showed up to chat out on the cabin porch. We all sat together and waited as everyone was putting their final touches on, then Jarren and I made our way to the ceremony venue. Jarren and David were walking Brit down the aisle, so it was important we got there as early as we could.

When we got there, Jarren went off to do his own last minute prep, and I started setting up the guest table with Jarren's grandpa Doug. Once everyone started filtering in, we took our seats and waited for the ceremony to begin.

I hate emotions, but boy did I tear up hearing Dakota read his vows to Brittney. Thankfully, it wasn't just me; the whole front row had tears in their eyes.

When the ceremony was over, we all made our way to the reception and mingled. However much fun Jarren, David, and I were having had the constant threat of going back to Billings looming over us, though. We were all on the same early morning flight to Minneapolis the next morning (David was flying for work), which was a 2 hour drive back from where we were now.

Around 10, we said goodbye to the bride and groom, the rest of our family, and made our way back to Billings for what would be a very short sleep.

A whirlwind of a day. Our flight was leaving Billings at 6:30 AM and we were all checking multiple bags, so we'd have to get there by at least 5:15 AM. After getting back late the night before, I'm sure you can imagine that this was not a fun morning for any of us. The bright side, though, was that none of us were hungover.

We were at the airport by 5:10, but were met with the world's longest checked baggage line. I don't want to be nice about this, because I was there in person and saw it: there was one woman checking bags and she was absolutely not doing her job. She was shooting the breeze with travelers, wasting everyone's time. The line began to pile up, and before we knew it, the line was almost backed up against the airport doors. We waited in that line for, I kid you not, one full hour. Everyone on the same flight as us was nervous that we'd all miss boarding. David, Jarren, and I all have PreCheck, so we weren't too concerned, but we knew we'd be cutting it close. However, I also considered that there was a large amount of people on our flight that still hadn't checked bags, and I'd never met an airline rude enough to fly without a large amount of passengers when they know where those passengers probably are.

Anyway, after an hour of waiting and someone else finally coming to help check bags, we made it onto the plane with a few minutes to spare. Not a moment later, the pilot made an announcement that we'd be waiting for the other passengers still in line, which ended up delaying the flight an extra 20 minutes. I was there and I can say with the utmost confidence, that old woman working at the Delta baggage drop this fine morning caused our flight to be delayed.

We finally took off and we each tried to sleep, with David and I coming to no avail. When we landed in Minneapolis, we went our separate ways as David did not have a connection and we did. With another two hours or so until our flight back to LGA, Jarren and I grabbed lunch and waited.

During our flight back to LGA, there were storms over Ohio/PA, causing the plane to actually turn back at one point in time. When I fly, I don't look at anything else on the screen in front of me except the map, so when I noticed this change in direction and an increase in our time to destination a good 10 minutes before the crew announced it, I was alarmed. Before they'd made an announcement, I'd seriously convinced myself that the plane had been hijacked. Thank God everything was ok, but in the end, this detour cost us an extra 30 minutes in the air. On top of this, when we arrived at LGA, we'd arrived so late that there wasn't a gate open for us, so we waited another 15 minutes on the tarmac. When we finally deplaned and got to baggage claim, we waited for 15 minutes and then realized that Delta separated our bags and sent one of them to the wrong carousel. We got out of LGA close to 4:00 PM when we originally should've been out by 1:45. It was peak Grand Central traffic time (thanks, Delta).
My dad so kindly put up with the traffic to pick us up, bought us halal, then brought us home to pick up our dogs and say "hi" to my mom. Unfortunately, tomorrow would be Jarren's first day of classes ever at Penn State, so he couldn't miss it, we'd have to leave today. We ate, said our goodbyes, packed up the puppies, and embarked on our 4 hour road trip back to State College, PA. We ended up getting back to our home at 10 PM. I'm glad Groundhog Day is not a real thing, because this is not a day I'd want to relive.

Cost to Travel:
This flight price was HEFTY. I don't think either of us expected August pricing to be as high as it was, but there seemed to be a trend of pure audacity with every airline and destination that lasted from June to September of 2022. A usual 8-day roundtrip flight from LGA to BIL at the end of August ranges between $550-$630. For our flight, we paid - drumroll please - $797.80. Yes, you read that number right. To fly domestically, we paid more than the price of a flight to Germany during the same time frame. If you know me, you know I'm thrifty, so you'd also know that this really was the cheapest I could find. It's still crazy to me when I think about it. Airlines really were robbing people all Summer '22.
