TRIP #2:
BACHVILLE

January 14, 2023

My Nashelorette party day has finally arrived! Truthfully, I didn't really want a bach party. The wedding is expensive enough and I felt bad asking my bridesmaids to foot the bill of yet another thing, but everyone wanted to throw one, so here we are. Today would be my first time flying out of Harrisburg, and I was interested in seeing what the airport would be like. Having grown up 15 minutes away from JFK, 30 minutes away from LGA, I was spoiled with never having to leave for my flights too early. Today, however, I'd need to leave a few hours in advance as Harrisburg's airport is over an hour and a half away from our home in State College. I got out of bed, ate breakfast, got ready, finished packing my suitcase, and when all was said and done, I was 40 minutes later than I expected to be when we left the house. Big shoutout to Jarren for being a good sport and letting me ruin his fine Saturday morning by having to make a 3 hour roundtrip just so I could get on a cheap flight to Nashville.

Some time later, we arrived at the airport and said our goodbyes. Despite leaving late, I was still a whole hour and a half early, so I made my way through security and headed to Starbucks. My first impression of MDT was that it was blaringly empty. When I was in line at Starbucks, I heard an employee say that the last flight of the day was at 5:30 PM. It was barely past noon now and I was the only traveler in sight. I couldn't believe it. Some "international" airport this was. I grabbed my pistachio cream cold brew and headed over to my gate, where I swear the entire airport was huddled into one corner waiting for their flight to board. Since I was flying with American Airlines to Nashville, I was first flying to Philly, as AA does not do direct flights from MDT to BNA. I boarded my flight and we took off.

Once in the air, I immediately didn't feel well and started trying to gaslight myself into not panicking. I had a few bites of potatoes and eggs this morning and tried to quell my hunger with my cold brew from Starbs, which was definitely backfiring as I was getting the most intense headache of my life, all while my knees started to feel like they were giving out even though I was sitting down. Thankfully, the flight from Harrisburg to Philly was only around 45 minutes long, and I was silently thanking God that I made it through the first leg of my flight without causing a scene when we finally touched down.

I knew I needed to get food before my next flight or else I was guaranteed to pass out, but people were taking such a long time to get off of the plane that by the time I finally got off, my next flight which was on the other side of the terminal, was only minutes away from boarding. I was barely mentally present as I ran off the jet bridge and into the main terminal. There was a Qdoba that had no line, so I ran over to that, cutting people off on my way to the front, apologizing that my flight was boarding so I needed to get ahead, when in reality I was about two seconds away from passing out onto the floor.

I grabbed my meal and made a beeline for my gate. I was one of the last people onto the plane, but I made it. I sat down and immediately started scarfing down my burrito bowl. Thankfully, I'd had the foresight to put a Liquid IV packet in my purse, and I mixed that in with my water bottle and chugged it. Within minutes, my headache subsided and I began to feel like a whole, functioning human again. Less than two hours later, I was walking to my Uber outside of the airport in Music City.

All of my bridesmaids except for Dani had shown up to the Airbnb before me. Dani had some unfortunate luck with Delta at JFK earlier; she'd arrived for her 10 AM flight on time, and the plane ended up getting delayed so much that what should've been a noon arrival for her actually ended up being closer to 6 PM Nashville time. My Uber driver, Donald, did not say a single word to me the entire duration of our drive. When I arrived at the Airbnb, I awkwardly thanked him, then went inside. I was met with big smiles by Sabrina, Allyson, and Alexis, and when I looked up at one of the walls, I noticed that they'd decorated in honor of my bach party. Each balloon letter of my name looked like it was absolutely miserable to blow up, and I was so grateful to have people in my life that loved me enough to get lightheaded over me.

We hung around a bit while we waited for Dani. Meagan, who was asleep in a bedroom upstairs, finally woke up when Dani finally showed up. We all got dressed, took some photos with the decor, and Ubered to dinner 3 hours later than we'd originally intended to.

When we got to dinner at the Twelve Thirty Club, we were told that they were exclusively taking reservations that night and would not be able to seat us. A bummer, we decided to head over to the Mexican spot next door, Blanco Cosina, for service.

Blanco was actually a spot Jarren and I had tried to stop at on our last trip here, but they were far too busy to serve us when we arrived, so we ended up leaving and didn't get the chance to come back. It was 10 PM now, but pretty busy, leaving us to wait around 20 minutes for a table. When we were finally seated, we were all starving and ordered right away. The waitress served us chips and queso while we waited and we were all enthralled with the queso. It was some of the best queso I've had to date. Once dinner came, we all ate, then made our way out the door and onto Broadway to get to our first honky tonk stop.

Our first stop was Tootsies, purely because I'd had the absolute time of my life there during my last trip, and wanted to share that ecstasy with my friends. However, after about 10 minutes exploring each floor before getting to the top, I was disappointed and honestly, a little sad. Tootsies was not as I remembered it. No, nothing had physically changed, but the entire atmosphere was different. The bands were not as good as the prime time bands I'd experienced two years ago, the crowd was much older than the crowd I'd been a part of, and there were way less people than before. I was disheartened and yearned for the packed house Jarren and I had danced in back in April '21.

A few drinks later, we figured we'd given it a fair shot and decided to try some other spots on the strip. We parted with Tootsies and made our way over to Jason Aldean's. Once inside, we got a table in the back and ordered a few drinks, then danced along with the band (who was way better than any of the bands on all three floors of Tootsies). Around an hour later, we decided to hop over to one more spot for the night, so we strolled down the block to Kid Rock's honky.

The first floor of Kid Rock's was packed, so we took the elevator up to the 5th floor in hopes of a smaller crowd and more space. When the elevator doors opened, we realized we were correct. The crowd upstairs was mainly near the stage, leaving the back of the room and bar open for seating and mingling. A stranger saw the veil on my hat and came up to me and asked if I was getting married, to which I replied "yeah, I am." Clearly drunk, he reached into his pocket, pulled out his wallet, and handed me a crisp $20 bill. "Here ya go, that's for you," he said, and then walked off. I was both amused and blown away. I pocketed the cash and walked over to the bar, but then realized I didn't actually feel like I needed another drink. I was ok with where I was at for the night, and as bars were beginning to close, we decided to head back to the Airbnb for some much welcomed sleep.

However, when we got back to the Airbnb, Dani shared that she'd actually brought me a celebratory cake that she'd had a family friend make in Brooklyn. Allyson, Alexis, Dani, and I sat at the dining room table as she pulled it out for us to share. The cake was beautiful and I was so touched at the fact that she not only had someone make this cake for me, but also went through all the trouble of bringing it here to Tennessee after the crazy day she'd had at the airport. We sat and ate, remarked about how phenomenal the cake was, and just had a nice wind down of the night together.

My New Years resolution this year was to start being a better friend, which all of my bridesmaids were aware of. Today once again made me beyond grateful to have friends like these in my life. I'm not sure how I got so lucky having friends who care for me as much as they do, but it certainly is not lost on me.

After this first day, I was excited not only excited for the rest of the trip, but even more excited to shower my bridesmaids with love on their own special days someday.

January 15, 2023

Day 2! Before we went to sleep last night, I huffed and puffed at everyone about how we had to be up early so we could get to breakfast without a rush in the morning because we needed to be at Pedal Tavern at 3:45 PM no matter what. Well, I was clearly full of shit, because 8:00 AM rolled around and I was still in bed. When 8:30 turned up, Dani and Sabrina were awake and came downstairs to talk the morning through. We were all clearly still tired, and Allyson, Meagan, and Alexis hadn't even woken up yet. We decided we wouldn't leave until around noon. They headed back up to their rooms, but I knew I wouldn't be able to fall back asleep, so I started getting ready.

Everyone slowly started coming alive and rolling out of bed when I got out of the shower around 10:30. With all the bustle of getting ready, we didn't get into our Uber until around 12:30. We were supposed to be having breakfast this morning at Milk and Honey, but when we arrived, the line was so long, it was a 2.5 hour wait to be seated. No, Milk and Honey does not take reservations. Now hungry and caffeine-less, we got coffee as we tried to figure out our next stop. I got a milk and honey latte that was *chef's kiss.* Allyson got a cold pressed strawberry juice that was also great, but overpriced for the size. We decided on walking down the street to Biscuit Love, since I'd read rave reviews about it when deciding on a breakfast spot a few months ago. Unfortunately for us, though, the line was wrapped around the curb when we got there. We were now running out of time to eat, so we ended up grabbing food at the restaurant across the street, The Pub.

We got mimosas and some brunch plates, then we were off to Pedal. On our walk over, we stopped at a liquor store to get some drinks to bring with us, as drinks are not provided by Pedal. The rules on the waiver we all signed stated that we could not bring glass or any alcohol above 8% ABV, so Alexis and I ended up getting a few White Claw Surges. Some of the other bridesmaids wanted to beat the system, though, and ended up buying a few bottles of lemonade, drinking some, and then filling it back up with vodka for the trip over. Dani was especially crafty with hers, being careful not to rip the sticker that came on the bottle so that it would look like it had never been opened. We got our drinks and took some jello shots that were also on sale at the store. Alexis and I were standing by the door to leave and took our shot, and we both looked at each other immediately and laughed. At 14% ABV per shot, they were strong and no amount of fruit flavoring could cover the alcohol up. Everyone else took their shots, and then we started walking the rest of the way to Pedal.

When we got to Pedal, we signed our waivers and got gray wristbands, then waited for our tour to start. While waiting, Dani came over to me and asked me if I recognized the girls in the corner of the room. I glanced over and saw 4 girls we'd gone to high school with, standing around and waiting for their tour to start, too. "No way!" I exclaimed at them, and they were equally as surprised. I hadn't seen any of them since we graduated high school. It was such a crazy coincidence. They were in Nashville for a girls' trip and had never done Pedal before. I couldn't get over the serendipity of it all.  Unfortunately, they had yellow wristbands, which meant they were on another tavern. They got called first, so we said our goodbyes and parted ways.

Moments later, our tour was ready. We were placed with two other groups of girls, one group from Illinois who was in Nashville on a girls' trip, and another group from Lindenhurst who was celebrating their friend's 21st birthday. Some of the girls from that group recognized Meagan, who is also from Lindy. It was yet another crazy coincidence. New Yorkers do infiltrate everywhere, don't we?

We got on Pedal and onto the road and all started drinking, dancing, and singing along to songs like "Save A Horse (Ride A Cowboy)," "Country Girl (Shake It For Me)," and "Ms. New Booty." I was feeling pretty fine, at a good level with my drinks, and then our Pedal driver made me shotgun a White Claw and it was over for me. Any sensibility I had when it came to calmly maintaining my drinks was out the window.

Our Pedal bar stop for the day was at Redneck Riviera. We got off and made our way inside and were greeted by a fluffy, lovable black Lab service dog. He looked like Quinn and it sent a pang of sadness into me that made me miss him instantly. We got a round of 12 green tea shots and downed them, then walked back to our Pedal to continue the tour.

On our closing leg of the tour, one of the Illinois girls felt like she had displaced her kneecap and got off the tavern and sat on the side of the street in pain. Her friends and Allyson (she works in a hospital) jumped off the tavern to see if she was ok. The tavern made a spin around the block, stopped, and our driver jumped off to go check on her, leaving me in charge of the tavern. I hopped into the middle and passed out drinks, then danced a bunch until he came back. Once he and Allyson were back, he announced that the other girls would be staying with their friend and not rejoining us. We continued onward a little bit further, then the tour ended.

We got off with the Lindenhurst girls and decided to walk to the Wild Beaver Saloon a few blocks away so that we could ride a mechanical bull. We went in, signed up to do karaoke, and paid $5 each to ride the bull. Dani, Sabrina, and I each took turns riding the bull, honestly doing better than I expected us to. When it was my turn, I got on the bull and held on for dear life. This ride would've been easy if I was sober, but of course, I was not. I was gripping the rein so tightly with my left hand that my engagement ring started cutting into the sides of my middle and pinky fingers. Eventually, I couldn't stand the feeling of the ring pressing into my skin anymore, so I dropped off.

After the bull, we got called on stage for karaoke. I thought it was a "we" activity, but apparently it was a "me" activity with my friends all dancing on stage behind me. I was doing "You Proof" by Morgan Wallen and let me tell you, it was not good, as karaoke is supposed to be. I was lucky I knew all the words and melody by heart, because I was still coming down from all the drinks on Pedal and could not concentrate on the screen in front of me. However terrible of a rendition it was, it was still a lot of fun. We got off stage and decided it would be best to head back to the Airbnb to recharge and change before dinner.

When we were done relaxing and changing, it was once again too late to be seated for dinner at most places. We called an Uber and headed straight back to Blanco, since we were sure we'd be seated there again tonight. We had queso again as we waited for our food to arrive, and accidentally ordered a double of all of our drinks. When we asked for a double, we thought that meant we were getting double the liquor. When the drinks showed up on our table, we realized they meant double the drink. The drinks were gigantic and we all had a hard time finishing them. We dented them as much as we could, ate dinner, then left for Nudie's Honky Tonk down the street.

We went straight to the rooftop at Nudies, and the music there seemed to be right up everyone's alley. I cannot commend my friends enough for trying on this trip. Apart from myself, Dani, and Meagan, my friends did not like country and barely knew any songs. I'd made them a playlist of popular songs we'd hear in Nashville before we'd arrived, but even then, they were not thrilled about all the live music being country and having to subject themselves to it. That aside, they really did try to get into the spirit and learn some of the songs and dance along. The music at Nudies, however, wasn't live. It was run by a DJ and they played songs you'd hear in a club back at home, which was perfect for my friends who needed a break from country. They even played Justin Bieber, who if you know me, is the "JB" that 15 year old me thought I'd be marrying. After a few drinks here, we walked over to Honky Tonk Central.

The band on the first floor of Honky Tonk was hit or miss when we first arrived. The music was either good country, or "eh" in my opinion. Everyone grabbed some drinks and sat down, I grabbed water knowing that I had to fly home tomorrow and didn't want to feel like garbage on the flight back. When a table cleared up near the stage, we moved over to it. The singer on stage noticed my hat and asked me if I was getting married and what my name was. She then said to the entire bar "Danielle down here is getting married on purpose! On the count of 3, tell her not to do it! Ready? One, two, three!" and the whole bar erupted in "Don't do it!" We all laughed and she went back to singing.

A few minutes later, I decided to buy a song request. In Nashville, bands don't get paid for their performances, so they make money by charging $20 per song request, and off of the tips they get when they pass around a bucket or hat through the crowd. I'd brought $20 in cash to Nashville just to request a song, but hadn't up until now. I was fiending for some Morgan Wallen, but also hadn't heard any Miranda Lambert since we'd got here, so I went up to the bucket and asked if she could do "Gunpowder and Lead." She said that she could, but then made a big spectacle out of it. She said into her mic, "I love it when girls that are getting married ask me to sing songs about killing their husbands," and then asked myself and the 'maids come up on stage. I froze. I wanted to scream the lyrics in the peace and comfort of the darkness near my table, not on stage for the whole (packed) bar to see. We didn't have a choice, though, as a bandmate came down and escorted us onto stage. I did not have enough alcohol in my system for this, but I was already up there, so I wasn't going to make it awkward. She started singing and we started dancing. It was actually pretty fun by the time it was all said and done. We made our way off the stage and back to our table.

Alexis' flight back to New York was scheduled to leave BNA at 6:30 AM, which means she'd  have to be in the airport by around 5 or so because she was checking her bag. I looked down at my phone and noticed it was almost 2 AM. I was ready to go home, anyway, but I also wanted to be respectful of Alexis' flight time, so we called and Uber and said goodbye to Broadway.

When we got  back to the Airbnb, everyone kinda drifted off to do their own thing except Dani, Meagan and I. We sat at the kitchen island and chatted, then Dani brought out the rest of the cake and we ate some of it. Around 3:30 AM, I realized how late it was and that I needed sleep because I wanted to get breakfast before I headed to the airport in the morning, so I said goodnight and went to bed.

Extended day 2, but actually day 3. Unfortunately for me, I didn't get much sleep. I fell asleep as soon as my bed hit the pillow, but woke up around 7:30 and couldn't go back to sleep. My body's internal clock is great for when I need to go to work, but absolutely screwed me today as I was still dirt tired but knew that if I tried to go back to sleep now, I'd overdo it. I begrudgingly got out of bed, packed my suitcase, and got ready to go. Dani and Sab came downstairs to chat quickly, but shared that they both still felt drunk and wouldn't be coming to breakfast with us, then went right back upstairs to sleep. Meagan, surprisingly, was up and already getting ready.

Around 10:15 AM, I called an Uber to take Meagan, Allyson, and I to the Pancake Pantry for breakfast. On our ride over, my Uber driver talked about how much Nashville has changed since he was a kid. He shared that Broadway used to be pretty seedy, with Tootsies being one of two honkys, and the rest of the buildings were either boarded up or adult stores, a far cry from what it is today.

We arrived at the Pancake Pantry and were lucky enough to not be met with a line that was out the door. We waited inside for around 15 minutes, then were seated. The line we had avoided, appeared as we began eating. I ordered banana bread pancakes which, much to my surprise, really did taste exactly like banana bread. I was expecting it to just be stuffed with bananas and not taste like banana bread at all, but I was pleasantly mistaken. The cold brew I had, though, was the worst cold brew I'd had in a long time. 12/10 do not recommend their house cold brew.

When 11:30 came around, I figured it would be best for me to head to the airport. I was checking my bag to fly back and needed to get that done before 12:15, so I ordered an Uber and said goodbye to my friends. I got to the airport, did all the check-in processes, and waited at my gate until my flight was ready to board. I was flying Allegiant to return, which was my first time flying with them. The flight time was around 1 hour and 45 minutes to fly directly back to Harrisburg. I will say, for Allegiant being a budget airline, I did not have a single issue with them. They seem to have the same fleet as American Airlines, and my only gripe was that snacks and drinks are not complimentary. I didn't need that, however, as the flight was so short. I landed back in Harrisburg, grabbed my bag, and met Jarren for the hour and a half drive back home, excited to see both him and my puppies.

Cost to Travel:

Being a frequent flyer really helped me out on this one. I flew one way from MDT to BNA with American Airlines, then one way back with Allegiant Airlines from BNA to MDT for a total of $115.60. A 3 day trip in January from MDT to BNA usually costs around $300 per person. My leg with AA cost me $5.60 in taxes because I paid for it with 6,000 award miles. My leg back with Allegiant cost $83, but I paid an extra $27 to check my bag. Had I been flying with Jarren, though, that bag would've been free. A little sad about that lol.

I loved this house. It's a 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom house located in Germantown that is clean, roomy, and safe. This is one of the nicest Airbnbs I've ever stayed at and I really have no qualms. I'd stay here again if I ever travelled back to Music City with a group of friends.
